Cobra microTALK MT975-2VP Two Way Radios

I have been using Cobra MT975 VP two way radios for my research in Ethiopia since July 2008.

My research takes place in the Bale Mountains National Park and consists of following Ethiopian wolves on foot. I work with three field assistants, and we usually work in two teams of two. In order to communicate with each other about the whereabouts of our focal wolves, we use the Cobra radios. The terrain in Bale is very open (we are above the tree line) but full of hills and valleys.

The radios usually have a good range, although not the 12km max range it says on the features. We usually manage to communicate over a maximum range of about 8 km. One great advantage of these radios is that the ‘talk’ button is on the side of the radio and not too sensitive, so you can safely put it in your pocket without it contacting the other radio as you walk. The batteries last quite long; we charge our radios every night and use them for about 13 hours during the day, although they are usually stand by and the talk time is probably never more than an hour. We have been using the radios for about 8 months now and the batteries have never gone dead before the end of the day. The conditions we use the radios in are quite tough. It rains heavily during the rainy season and in the dry season the radios are charged at temperatures just above 0°C. We often have to run and jump to follow the wolves so the radios get knocked around quite a bit and have all been dropped more than once.

Nonetheless, after 8 months, all four radios are still as good as new and functioning well. All in all I am very satisfied with these radios and would recommend them to anyone who wants to use them in similar terrain and conditions.
